چکیده

We characterize the selective deposition of liquid microstructures on chemically heterogeneous surfaces by means of dip coating processes. The maximum deposited film thickness depends critically on the speed of withdrawal as well as the pattern size, geometry, and angular orientation. For vertically oriented hydrophilic strips, we derive a hydrodynamic scaling relation for the deposited film thickness which agrees very well with interferometric measurements of dip-coated liquid lines. Due to the lateral confinement of the liquid, our scaling relation differs considerably from the classic Landau–Levich formula for chemically homogeneous surfaces. Dip coating is a simple method for creating large area arrays of liquid microstructures for applications involving chemical analysis and synthesis, biochemical assays, or wet printing of liquid polymer or ink patterns. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-8979~00!07122-X#

Surface Engineering and Patterning Using Parylene for Biological Applications

Parylene is a family of chemically vapour deposited polymer with material properties that are attractive for biomedicine and nanobiotechnology. Chemically inert parylene “peel-off” stencils have been demonstrated for micropatterning biomolecular arrays with high uniformity, precise spatial control down to nanoscale resolution. Such micropatterned surfaces are beneficial in engineering biosensor...

Patterned CVD Growth of SWNTs for Device Application

Japan Several patterned growth techniques of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by modifing the dip-coating process are discussed. The conventional concept of using SiO2 patterned Si substrates to selectively grow 3D carbon nanotube structures can be applied to a dip-coating method followd by alcohol CVD growth. High-quality vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) patterns c...

Patterned Growth of High-quality Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes from Dip-coated Catalyst

Here we show that the conventional concept of using SiO2 patterned Si substrates to selectively grow 3D carbon nanotube structures can also be applied to a dip-coating method. High-quality vertically aligned single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) patterns can be easily obtained by this protocol. Apart from the sintering of catalyst into Si at high temperature, the difference in surface wettabilit...

Conformal dip-coating of patterned surfaces

Capillarity-driven self-assembly of small chips onto planar target substrates is a promising alternative to robotic pick-and-place assembly. It critically relies on the selective deposition of thin fluid films on patterned binding sites, which is anyway normally non-conformal. We found that the addition of a thin wetting sidewall, surrounding the entire site perimeter, enables the conformal flu...

Modulation of human dermal microvascular endothelial cell and human gingival fibroblast behavior by micropatterned silica coating surfaces for zirconia dental implant applications

Dental ceramic implants have shown superior esthetic behavior and the absence of induced allergic disorders when compared to titanium implants. Zirconia may become a potential candidate to be used as an alternative to titanium dental implants if surface modifications are introduced. In this work, bioactive micropatterned silica coatings were produced on zirconia substrates, using a combined met...
